The Coming Out Game™

by Jeb on September 22, 2000

A while back, our mate Cam came out as a gay guy to four people within 24 hours. Thus, The Coming Out Game was incepted.

Not to be outdone, I succesfully came out to five people within 24 hours. You get double points for a bad reaction, and I got a reaction that was mildly offputting, so I only got an extra half point instead of the regular double points. My final score was 5.5, topping Cam.

Since I first mentioned this in my journal, it appears a lot of people want to play The Coming Out Game as well.

So here are the rules!

Rules for gay/bi players:

* Score 1 point for every person you come out to within 24 hours.
* Score 1 bonus point if you get a bad reaction, half a point if you get a mildly offput reaction.
* Score 1 bonus point for each parent you tell.

Rules for straight players:

* Score 1 point for every person you can convince that you are gay within 24 hours.
* Again – 1 bonus point if you get a bad reaction, half a point for a mildly offput reaction.
* The 1 bonus point for each parent rule applies here as well.
* After the first 24 hour period, straight people have a bonus 24 hour round: they can then attempt to convince the people they told that they’re NOT actually gay. For every person they succesfully convince that they’re NOT gay, you get another bonus point.
* If someone tries to convince you to undertake counselling, you get 4 bonus points.

For all players, you can earn bonus points if any of the following occur:

* Either of your parents say they envy you – because your partner isn’t recognised as a de facto relationship and you’re in quite a sweet tax position: 1 point
* You tell one of your grandparents that you’re gay: 1 point
* You tell one of your grandparents that you’re gay, and they tell you that they’re gay too: 2 points
* You are asked if you identify with the members of The Village People: 1 point
* You are asked if you identify AS a member of The Village People: 5 points
* You are asked for a copy of The Homosexual Agenda so that the person you have just told can better understand you: 1 point
* You are asked for a copy of The Homosexual Agenda so that the person you have just told can better understand you; and you tell them you don’t have a copy. You go on to say that you do, however, have a copy of the abridged edition, entitled ‘Fag Agenda Lite!’: 2 points
* You try to convince your same-sex friend that you’re not sexually interested in them at all, and then they want to know what’s wrong with them: 1 point
* Your dad has an impromptu celebration of gay and lesbian culture by dressing up as a woman: 1 point
* Your parents tell you “Don’t worry, you can still get pregnant – didn’t you ever see ‘Junior’ with Arnold Schwarzenegger?”: 2 points
* You’re male, and you tell your parents that you’re a gay man, and they say they’re proud: 1 point
* You’re female, and you tell your parents that you’re a lesbian, and they say they’re proud: 1 point
* You’re female, and you tell your parents that you’re a gay man, and they say they’re proud: 10 points
* You have a midi music file of ‘Cherish’ by Madonna on your homepage: 20 points
