Top 5 Things I Can Do Now I’m Single

by Jeb on January 18, 2010

Well, howdy there. I’ve settled into my new place, and have plenty of recent events to write about in the coming weeks: berko neighbours, household disasters, and a New Year’s Eve skinnydipping jellyfish sting disaster among others. Hopefully this is the start of almost-daily blog updates again.

There were certain activities which really seemed to irk Adam, my ex. Although we get along fine as mates these days, I now have the chance to indulge myself in certain things that have been missing from my life for a while.

Yes, obviously there’s a whole range of saucy activities I can engage in now I’m single, but this is more about the practical things.

#5: Purchasing any form of Asian paper-based lighting

Paper lamps are often the most affordable lighting options in omnipresent Swedish furniture stores, but a certain someone had a belief that “they’ll set themselves on fire in a matter of hours”. Now I’m free to run the risk of flammable lighting options all on my own.

#4: Inexplicably using every single bowl in the house to cook the simplest of meals

Even if I’m throwing together something as simple as an omelet, I seem to burn through every freakin’ bowl in the house just to put it together. Of course, after cooking a meal I never felt like washing up the dishes, so we were always eating cereal out of things like coffee cups the next morning. I run on my own culinary rules now, so I can use fourteen bowls to create a simple serve of pasta without any consequences!

#3: Playing music on a permanent basis

Not so much the fault of my ex, because he preferred the TV in the living room, but I’m definitely a music person. Blaring out my favourite tunes at all times of day is freakin’ awesome. This is especially the case when I wake up -- I’m a big fan of crunchy breakfast metal, but Adam was a Sunriseologist, which cancelled out playing any music. No longer! I eat Dillinger Escape Plan for breakfast these days!

Speaking of Dillinger, how awesome is their new single?

Sorry. I’ll find any excuse to work Dillinger into a blog post.

#2: Unnecessarily lighting more candles than a Catholic Church merely to read a book

Look, it’s in my homo genes: I freaking love candles. Unfortunately, when I had 400 candles burning away like a furnace in the bedroom so I can feel like I’m reading in the dark ages, it caused problems when Adam wanted to sleep. Blowing out that sheer quantity of candles causes the room to smell like a small bushfire with all the smoke. Luckily, these days, I’m free to choke on all the carbon monoxide I like as I fall asleep.

#1: Lifting a blanket ban on board games

For whatever reason, Adam hated board games. This manifested some sort of board game-based shame deep within me, as if it was simply far too geeky and nerdy to dare open a board game over a few beers with friends. However, I think I’m ready to give all this a crack again, although I haven’t really played anything since I was 18. What does everyone play these days over a few drinks? Strip Jenga?

I was there for a week and there were no board games. Do you even OWN board games? GO OUT AND BUY BOARD GAMES IMMEDIATELY!

Byron January 18, 2010 at 7:10 pm

No board games? For more than TEN YEARS? This is a travesty. Board game night, STAT.

Jeb January 18, 2010 at 7:18 pm

It also didn’t help that at one stage of my life, a friend pointed out: “You know the families you see on the front of board game boxes? That’s what your family reminds me of.” DEEP-SEATED BOARD GAME SHAME, I TELLS YA!

Actually, if anyone still has the Nightmare board game, that’d be beyond entertaining if we’re all liquored up.

I’m on Adam’s side. Except for the TV.

I will see and raise your Board Game Shame: I bought the Wheel of Fortune board game three days after actually being on Wheel of Fortune. And I was BUSTED. “Weren’t you just on that show?” asked the Toys R Us employee. Yes…well…I…am…uh…buying this for a friend. I’m certainly not reliving my glory over and over, playing this boardgame while watching my videotaped episodes and masturbating furiously…

hahaha I LOVE board games! You need to include me in your next board game night!

When it was hip, I got the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire game… I was so geeky, I downloaded all the stings and sounds from the show so that when I played it with my family it was like we were on the show…

If only we had a video camera….

Love this post.
Paper lighting and candles rock. As do boardgames!

Andrew January 18, 2010 at 9:18 pm

And when this novelty of self indulgence loses its glitter? Oh, sounds harsh. I am with your ex on one count. I am sure those paper lamps will self immolate.

Jeb January 18, 2010 at 9:26 pm

To be honest, the sheer volume of bloody candles in this place negates the need for any paper lanterns any time soon.

I would make friends with you just to be a part of a Nightmare boardgame boozy party. I’d even supply a pretty dusty copy of Nightmare. That is how awesome my memories of that game were. Remember when the dude would be all ‘Come closer to the screen, come closer, come closer’ and then yell?

IT WAS AMAZING.

i love that the times i thought about you most while i was in ireland involved lighting candles in catholic churches (yay for not being struck down by the hand of god) and using dyson air blade hand dryers!

Amnesty January 19, 2010 at 3:00 am

ARGH! Nightmare! Mea Culpa Anne. Is it possible for sis to participate in a Nightmare Booze Party via Skype? Drinking at 7am in the morning would be SO L.A of me ;)

Fern January 19, 2010 at 1:31 pm

And here was me getting excited about being able to fart and enjoy it without disproving looks. I hadn’t even considered board games and candles!

Divorce is imminent.

The Mutant January 19, 2010 at 3:35 pm

Maybe Adam is right about the paper lantern thing, espicially if you’re using candles not low wattage copact fluorescent globes. Than again, maybe not.

Do you have Mouse Trap. I’ll come and play that over beers if you do!
